Introduction

Your team is a group of young analysts working at a wealth management firm.

Your portfolio manager, who makes the final investment decisions, recently met with a prospective client: Caio Bonfim, Olympic athlete and world champion racewalker, who is planning the next chapter of his career.

Caio has built a remarkable career in sport, turning discipline and consistency into historic results, and is now looking for strategic financial planning to reach his long-term goals.

The manager expects your team to develop an investment strategy that allows Caio to reach those goals.

Getting to know Caio Bonfim

A world champion and Olympic medallist, Caio Bonfim was born in Brasília, in the Federal District, and is one of the greatest names in the history of Brazilian athletics. The son of a former athlete and a coach, he grew up literally on the track.

It took almost two decades for that stubbornness to turn into history: four Olympic Games, a silver medal at Paris 2024, and the world title in Tokyo 2025, both of them firsts for the sport in Brazil.

Today, at 34, Caio is known not only for his results but for the consistency and humility with which he built them, race by race, without shortcuts. He has always seen in sport something larger than medals: a way of strengthening a community.

Trained in Sobradinho, he carries the Sobradinho Athletics Centre (CASO) as part of his own identity: the institution that shaped him as an athlete and that he now helps to revitalise, campaigning for the renovation and modernisation of the tracks where it all began.

For him, giving that place its facilities back means giving opportunity back to those who, like him, were once just a kid with a dream and little structure to pursue it.

This is the philosophy that guides Caio: sport as a tool for transformation, humility as a method of work, and community as the reason for all of it. He consistently expresses his gratitude to the tracks that shaped him and his commitment to leaving them better than he found them.

Caio’s financial goals

Initial investment
US$ 100.000
Minimum target
US$ 200.000
Horizon
7 years

In early 2027, Caio plans to invest US$ 100,000 with a wealth management firm. His goal is for that amount to reach at least US$ 200,000 by 2033, over a seven-year horizon. He will make no further contributions and no withdrawals before the end of that period.

Caio’s personal expenses and short-term financial needs will be covered by income and resources outside the portfolio.

Although US$ 200,000 is the minimum needed to make his project viable, Caio would be pleased if the portfolio delivered a return above that level, allowing room for unexpected costs during the renovation and greater financial flexibility along the way. His aim is to deliver the best possible result so that children and athletes in the region can enjoy facilities worthy of their dreams.

Caio understands that investing involves uncertainty and periods of market volatility. Although he has shown throughout his career a willingness to take calculated risks, such as the decision to stay in a sport with little recognition in Brazil despite the lack of structure and support, he is looking for a portfolio that carefully balances growth with protecting the capital he needs to reach his goal, always placing safety above risky returns, guided by the values he has carried since he first set foot on a track: community, sport and humility.

Revitalising CASO

The Sobradinho Athletics Centre (CASO) is where it all started for Caio: it was there, still a teenager, that he took his first steps in racewalking, coached by his own parents, and where he built the foundation of a career that would take him to Olympic and world podiums.

Decades later, the institution shows its age, with worn tracks and outdated facilities, yet it remains the gateway for new generations of athletes in the region.

That is why Caio decided to direct part of his resources to revitalising and renovating the tracks at CASO. More than an investment in infrastructure, the project is a way of giving back, ensuring that children and young people in Brasília have access to the same opportunity he had, but in an even better environment to train, dream and compete.

The initiative reflects directly the values Caio has carried since the start of his career. Community, because the project is born of a wish to strengthen the place that shaped him, giving back part of everything he received. Sport, because he believes in the transformative power of athletics in the lives of young people who, like him once, may have no other structure available. And humility, because even after historic achievements, Caio still sees his own path as part of something larger, and makes a point of keeping his feet on the ground he came from.

What Caio expects to see

Both Caio and his manager know there is no single correct strategy for reaching his goals. Different teams may come to different conclusions about risk, asset allocation, liquidity, return expectations and financial flexibility along the way.

Each team must develop, justify and apply an investment strategy that supports the goal of doubling the capital in seven years and that treats the CASO revitalisation project responsibly. The strategy must also preserve the financial flexibility needed to handle the unexpected during the works.

Teams must identify and explain their assumptions about investment performance and the financial safety margin Caio should keep, and consider how favourable and unfavourable investment scenarios could affect their recommendations.

The main focus of each team must stay on the investment strategy and on contributing to Caio’s goals, without addressing topics beyond the scope of wealth management analysts.
